Damn, Daniel! Back at it again with the…

Terrible humor, I know.

Indeed, I am! Audaciously, I just chose to revive a barely populated blog that was intended to document my foray into the 2019 world of tech.

Of course, the panorama occurred and threw everything off its axis. And by everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Journey into tech included.

I spent some time meandering through this new and terrifying world of contagion, eating Taharka Ice cream, inhaling one too many birria tacos, working through furlough seasons, and then I realized- I still have the desire to learn about tech and expand my knowledge/skill set.

Two years ago, I created an incognito tech twitter so that I could sit at the feet of those who have really figured this shit out. While planted at their foot-fingers, I gained knowledge, resources, and so many ideas about what my own career could look like-if I had the courage to truly pivot.

So, I found the courage.

Well, actually, I found Mary.

Ok, not this Mary, but you get the point. A black woman boss.

Mary runs a series of top-notch boot camps (via My Tech Best Friend) that are truly “zero to hero”: taking random newbies like myself and transforming us into new, budding professionals in various tech and tech adjacent roles.

After completing a consultation with her, I decided that I was going to bet on myself. I came up off of a few coins and plunged myself into a Cyber Business Analyst/Scrum boot camp during the most HECTIC time as a student affairs professional – August. Unfortunately, I was (and currently am) experiencing serious burnout.

Nevertheless, she persisted. She, as in, raggedy me.

I hauled ass (and my two remaining brain cells) to class 3 days a week and learned about network, security, business analysis, and currently scrum. I worked through a variety of labs that helped me to practice the skills I learned from the lectures. I connected with classmates to occasionally commiserate, laugh, and most of all, to work really hard.

The Cyber BA group is Mary’s favorite even though she’d never admit it.

Here I am, with one lecture day left, and I’m truly thankful for all that I’ve learned. I’m overwhelmed in the best of ways! Over the next two weeks, I’ll do the following:

  • Review all lectures at 1.5x speed
  • Complete my Technical writing course and some additional classes
  • Finish my Jira Atlassian final assessment
  • Complete my Project Management cert
  • Complete 3 outstanding labs (they stumped me, unfortunately)

And if there’s time, I’ll touch on some of the Governance, Risk, and Compliance training resources provided. Then I’ll wrap it all up and send it over for official review and next steps. I already have new areas of learning I’ll be ready to focus on when I’m ready to add to my professional toolkit.

Long story short, I’m back (like Daniel) and I’m showing up and attaining everything within my reach.

And so it is!

Building a Computer

I built a computer today.

Digitally, but nevertheless.

Here are the parts:

PSU-power supply unit. Self explanitory.

RAM- short term memory storage. It wipes clean every time we power off.

CPU Socket- where the CPU goes. Lay the CPU down, apply thermal paste, apply the heat sink, then the CPU Fan.

The CPU calculates and processes data.

SATA Cables–these connect various parts to the motherboard. Like the HDD etc

The HDD is a form of the hard drive which holds all data (music, pics, apps) The SSD is a non-moving and more expensive hard drive (solid state drive). This is what my Korean tech guy, Phil, wanted to put in my Mac.

Case Fan- keeps things cool ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m going to find an old computer upstairs, take it apart, and rebuild it. I should have paid more attention to the static shock element though. Don’t want to get zinged! Once I do, I’ll take pics of the process and add them here.

Peace.

My journey through the Google IT Support Professional Certificate

Less than 24 hours ago, I took the plunge.

I reached into my mental wallet, extracted my credit card information, and signed up for Google ‘s IT Support Professional Certificate. It was 2:39 am. I was ready. And tired as fuck.

But I’m almost done with the first week of work (it took only a few hours) and I wanted to share some gems I’ve learned, my reasoning, and my entire life story. The latter will come at another day, for sure.

I learned how to convert binary values to decimals and vice versa in a matter of minutes.

Actually, I’ll save all of that for another blog post. In the words of our Queen, Beyonce, “I’ve got work to do”. Anyway, I learned how to convert binary value to decimal value in a matter of minutes. Hooray!

Here are some other terms and things I’ve learned so far.

Algorithm- a series of steps that solves specific problems

Cryptography- the art of writing and solving codes

Binary system- aka the base 2 numeral system is our computer language. (Binary to decimal and vice versa)In binary 1=On, 0=Off.

Abstraction- simplifying a complex system for our use.

This is the roughest ass draft I’ve ever written about anything, but I want to quickly document my learning in the moment.

I’ll make it flowery and shit later.

Peace.
